ALPHA J. BUIE
Alpha was born and raised in Olive Branch,
Mississippi, a very rural town just south of the Tennessee state line.
She graduated from the Central Mississippi College where she obtained a
degree in Education. After college, she worked for the Shelby County
School District as a teacher and with the Internal Revenue Service as
an Examinations Agent before relocating to the San Francisco Bay Area
with her family in 1977. Shortly thereafter, she started her own Income
Tax business, preparing income taxes from the family home. In January
1987, she accepted a position with The City & County of San
Francisco as a Juvenile Counselor at the Youth Guidance Center. She
worked as a Juvenile Counselor for two years before being promoted to
Deputy Probation Officer for the Adult Probation Department in the City
and County of San Francisco.
Her most notable assignments with the Adult Probation Department have
included a six year assignment as an Intensive Services Probation
Officer, supervising mentally ill offenders; seven years as Lead Case
Manager for the Network Treatment Grant For Women, a program that
targeted women in the Criminal Justice System with substance abuse
issues; and five years as Director of the P.O.W.E.R. Program (Probation
Officers Working to End Recidivism).
Alpha is the founder and Chairperson of the Inner City Adolescent
Network , Inc. (ICAN) in San Francisco County and the Peninsula Omega
Youth Club (POYC) in San Mateo County. POYC is a 501(c) 3 Non Profit
Corporation with a mission to kindle hope, bound with the reality of
life, within the youth who have the least hope. Alpha is committed to
and believes in helping underserved youth - who are either involved
with the criminal justice system, surrounded by poverty, drugs,
violence, mis-education, or other harmful influences - to reach their
full potential.
Alpha Buie has received numerous awards and accolades for her work with
at risk youth, including The Chief Probation Officer's Recognition of
Excellence, California Probation & Parole Officers Association's
Loren Beckley Award, California Legislature Assembly Certificate of
Recognition and Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from
Congressman Tom Lantos, to name a few.
Alpha is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated- Delta
Zeta Omega Chapter in San Francisco, an associate member of the
American Bar Association - Family Law Division, and a faithful member
of Providence Baptist Church in San Francisco.
Alpha is a mother of two and grandmother of four.
